Wath/Manvers Rail Disaster
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Wath/Manvers Rail Disaster a truly traumatic & memorable event in the Dearne Valley which involved large numbers of local people in the rescue & recovery.
To mark this anniversary an event is being organised by a small group of local historians to be held on Saturday 7th July 2018 at the LNER/Rowms Lane Social Club in Swinton from 12.00 till 16.00. The venue is around 10 mins walk from either Swinton or Mexborough rail stations; is on a good bus route & has free parking.
Plans have yet to be finalised however the afternoon will comprise of a presentation about the disaster by local author Mike Brearley; a meet the survivors session with special guests who were passengers on the train; meet descendants of the loco driver who lost his life.
Films, local history & railwayana stalls & displays will be available to view throughout the afternoon. Expert speakers will deliver presentations & real ale and food will be available. Admission includes an optional guided visit to the crash site by mini bus.Admission to the event will be £5 (£3 concessions). We hope to attract railway enthusiasts and those with a general interest from a wide area.
